We’ve all probably read that McDonald’s fries contain even 10 ingredients! We also all know how many ingredients we need to prepare fries! So, this fact should probably be sufficient to keep us away from McDonald’s.
Grant Imahara from the super-awesome science show Mythbusters dared to make this startling discovery when he visited a McDonald’s fry factory and reverse-engineered the fries so that he can discover what they’re actually made of.
“I know what you’re thinking,” he said as he stood in front of a conveyor belt that was spitting out the fries. “These look like potatoes, but are they really potatoes?”
Of course they aren’t!
This is only a shortened list of the ingredients contained in McDonald’s French fries:
Hydrogenated soybean oil
Natural beef flavor
Tertiary butylhydroquione (TBHQ)
The three most dangerous things on this list are TBHQ, dimethylpolysiloxane and hydrogenated soybean oil.
This ingredient is actually the main ingredient in Silly Putty.
But, you should know that it can be dangerous because it often contains formaldehyde, which is known to be toxic. The National Toxicology Program even lists it as carcinogenic to humans!
This ingredient is a type of phenol. This actually stops the fries from going bad. But, guess where it can be also found? In bio-diesel! Can you imagine that?
According to a report, this chemical was found in lab studies done on animals to cause liver enlargement, neurotoxic effects, convulsions and paralysis!
TBHQ was also placed on the black list of the Feingold diet and this diet is dedicated to managing attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder.
Hydrogenated Soybean Oil
This is the only thing that may even sound natural but it actually isn’t. Health experts refer to it as “the worst kind of fat, far worse than saturated fat”, also called trans-fat.
These are the risks connected to hydrogenated soybean oil according to Dr. Mercola:
Decreased immune system function
You may all think that it contains soybeans so how could it be that bad?
Dr. Mercola claims that soybean oil is actually not a healthy oil. Soybean oil is mostly contained from omega-6 fat and Americans consume far too much of it.
The Good News
McDonald’s said the following thing in a statement released to Global News last year:
“After listening carefully to our customers and identifying some of the challenges we were up against, McDonald’s created a transparent line of communication via the interactive, online Q&A platform.”
We now know that they’re aware of the fact what they put in their food and that people know it, too. We hope that they’ll quickly do something about it, even though for now, it is not familiar whether they’ve done anything to improve the quality of their food.
